Sophie wants a White Puppy for her birthday this year. When her Great Grandmother asked her what she wanted to do for her Birthday party her response was she wanted a White Puppy. Well Daddy and Mommy say NO (for now). Last week grandma had six white puppies. I am sure there is a Birthday puppy in the lot. I told her I would keep her puppy at my house she says she will keep her in her room. Last Saturday I asked Sophie what she would name a White Puppy? She whispered in my ear Pearl. Yesterday, she saw and held one of the puppies I asked her again the puppies name. Pearl she told me. Her mother asked her on the way home, "Sophie where did you get the name Pearl"? What Would You Do???

Saturday there was a judge change at the Utah Valley Kennel Club shows. The judge that replace the orginal judge is a person I ABHOR, detest, despise. I do not like their ethics and told them 16 years ago they would NEVER touch one of my dogs again. Well here was my dilemma. Do I break majors upsetting my fellow competiors or do I show my dogs knowing I will not be judged fairly in the ring?? Well I did not break the majors but I will not be as considerate next time. I am still angry I had to compromise my values and let that person touch my dogs.

Hi Lyle-

I wanted to email you and let you know what is going on with Puppy and us
these days.

Puppy is growing into a beautiful dog. Wherever we go with her, people
ask us about her and admire her. When we've taken her to the dog park
both husband and I agree that she is the most beautiful dog in the large
dog section and interacts with the other dogs better than the vast
majority of the dogs there. We all love her.

Balanced against is though is some serious emotional and behavioral
problems that son has been having, particularly since the beginning of
the year. We have been working with his neurologist, psychiatry and
now with a behavioral specialist to get him more balanced but at least
so far, we haven't made the kind of progress that we had hoped for.
Son can be wonderful one moment and angry and upset the next. I know
that you know puppy to be a sensitive soul, so you can imagine how his
erratic behavior is making puppy very anxious. We do our best to keep
them apart when he is acting this way but in real life it is not always
possible.

husband and I have talked about this a lot and we have even warned son
about what might happen if he doesn't control his temper. We really
feel that puppy should be in another home. Someday, Son will get
better but it won't come soon enough for puppy's best interest. We want
her to be a calm home, Lyle. I'm sad to say ours is not right now. We
feel puppy deserves better. I picture her in a calmer environment,
ideally with a kind but authoritative owner and preferably no small
children.

I don't think that I have to explain to you how difficult this decision
is. We have grown attached to puppy these last few months and made her
one of the family. But I have to ask myself if this is really good for
her? Sadly, it is not. We remember that the contract that we signed
with you stated that in the event that it didn't work out that we would
return puppy to you. If that is still your preference, we will certainly
do that. We have found that puppy gets terribly car-sick so it's hard to
imagine driving her back to Utah, although I suppose we could ask our
vet for a med. Alternatively, we could put her on a non-stop flight
from XXXX to Salt Lake City. I'd probably also ask the vet for something
to sedate her for that as well.

Lyle, in the back of mind is a certain fear that you will be mad at me.
You trusted us with your beloved puppy and while we have taken very good
care of her, we find ourselves needing to return her. We've never had
to do this with a dog before. It feels like a sad defeat for me personally.

We do hope you understand our decision and don't mind hearing this in an
email rather than a phone call. It's hard enough for me to type this
let alone talk about it. However, I will give you a call in a few days
and we can discuss the best arrangements.

Hi Lyle. I thought I'd send you a Nami update. The "puppy princess" lovesmeeting new people and likes to play with puppies that don't run her overwhen rough-housing (at her puppy class). She has a solid sit, down andstand. She has a reliable heel-finish (her favorite) and settle (layingdown on her side). She's doing well with learning no and off, and respondsto drop it and take it, even when really excited and playing. She stillhas some strong bites and nips, but "off" and "that's not your chew toy"are working better (she then goes to find one of her chew toys). She'sdifferent from any dog I've known because low/loud/sharp corrections makeher even more excited; low/slow/composed voices work best to redirect her.She loves the water in the pool and spraying from the hose. She ischanging our lives in the best of ways! Robyn

The Dreaded Green Guck

Last night Brooke did not want to eat her dinner. So I had Richard feed her canned Buffalo. She loves that stuff. After she at she climbed on his lap and wanted a tummy rub. Well--- I noticed dark guck so get the paper towel--Yep the DREADED GREEN====dead puppy or puppies.
That means all puppies could be dead. They were 2 day early not good. Get out my doppler I have healthy heartbeats in I know at least 4 puppies. So off to Payson Family Vet for a c-section.
We have 3 girls and 3 boys. All six black 2 curly boys all the others are wavies. Mom and pups are doing well this morning.

Judi thinks they should all be named after "chips" . So we have Ruffles (Can't Have Just One)

Doritos. Frito (Frito Bandito) Toastio, have to come up with at least 2 more names any ideas?

Garth won Best Opposite Sex in Puppy Sweepstakes and first in his class. He was considered for Winners Dog. Rita was Reserve Winners Bitch. Beau won first Award of Merit. With an Entry of 93 dogs we did very well.

Last night Callie was invited to La Caille resturant. It was the annual fundraiser for ITA (intermountian therapy association). Caille was the FIRST dog to be accepted into the Huntsman Cancer Center. She is also a "READ" program dog. Going to librairies and listening to children read to her. THANK YOU David and Judi Harris for the wonderful home you have given Callie and for sharing her with others!

Stayed up until 3am grooming Beau last night was not sure it was going to be worth it as I did not know who else would be here. It paid off Beau took his first Best of Breed today. Mac took Winners Dog and Rita took Winners Bitch and Best of Winners. It was fun to sweep all. Mac needs only 3 points to finish--Rita needs lots. Dreamer was a puppy in the ring jumping walking sideways. The judge really liked her but you need to keep 4 on the floor. Alan the AKC rep was at the corner of the ring on the down and back. He was laughing so hard he told me this is a dog show not a rabbit show.

This week I have 4 days of dog shows in Farmington Utah. The Portuguese will be showing Thursday, Friday Saturday and Sunday. Mack needs only four single point to finish. The girls are just beginning their careers. Dreamer is showing Thur Fri and Sat, Rita all four days and Party on Saturday and Sunday. I am showing two Bichons on Saturday only. I am not fond of Sunday's judge. I will not pay money for his opinion.

Trust... A Deadly Disease
There is a deadly disease stalking your dog, a hideous, stealthy thing just waiting its chance to steal your beloved friend. It is not a new disease, or one for which there are inoculations. The disease is called "Trust".You knew before you ever took your puppy home that it could not be trusted. The breeder who provided you with this precious animal warned you, drummed it into your head. Puppies steal off counters, destroy anything expensive, chase cats, take forever to house train, and must never be allowed off lead!When the big day finally arrived, heeding the sage advice of the breeder, you escorted your puppy to his new home, properly collared and tagged, the lead held tightly in your hand.At home the house was "puppy-proofed". Everything of value was stored in the spare bedroom, garbage stowed on top of the refrigerator, cats separated, and a gate placed across the living room to keep at least one part of the house puddle free. All windows and doors had been properly secured, and signs placed in all strategic points reminding all to "Close the door!"Soon it becomes second nature to make sure the door closes nine tenths of a second after it was opened and that it is really latched. "Don't let the dog out" is your second most verbalized expression. (The first is "No!")You worry and fuss constantly, terrified that your darling will get out and disaster will surely follow. Why not, he always runs straight to the door, dancing a frenzy of joy and waits to be let in. And, remember he comes every time he is called. You know he is the exception that disproves the rule. (And sometimes late at night, you even let him slip out the front door to go potty and then right back in. )Years pass- it is hard to remember why you ever worried so much when he was a puppy. He would never think of running out the door left open while you bring in the packages from the car. It would be beneath his dignity to jump out the window of the car while you run into the convenience store. And when you take him for those wonderful long walks at dawn, it only takes one whistle to send him racing back to you in a burst of speed when the walk comes too close to the highway. (He still gets in the garbage, but nobody is perfect!)This is the time the disease has waited for so patiently. Sometimes it only has to wait a year or two, but often it takes much longer. He spies the neighbour dog across the street, and suddenly forgets everything he ever knew about not slipping out doors, jumping out windows or coming when called due to traffic. Perhaps it was only a paper fluttering in the breeze, or even just the sheer joy of running...Stopped in an instant. Stilled forever- Your heart is broken at the sight of his still beautiful body.The disease is trust. The final outcome, hit by a car.Every morning my dog bounced around off lead exploring. Every morning for seven years he came back when he was called. He was perfectly obedient, perfectly trustworthy. He died fourteen hours after being hit by a car.Please do not risk your friend and your heart. Save the trust for things that do not matter.Please read this every year on your puppy's birthday, lest we forget.

Kisses did not get her weekly bathes for a month rather than make her endure the dematting she was given a close trim. I think she likes it even though it may feel a bit "funny".
